Average commuting distance almost 14 kilometres
The average commuting distance has become one and a half time longer in twenty years. This is primarily due to three factors: enlargement of commuting areas, increasing levels of commuting between urban regions, and specialisation of workplaces.Source:

Description of indicator
Average commuting distance refers to the one-way distance between the place of residence and workplace, given as a beeline distance. All employed people, for whose home and workplace the coordinates are known and whose commuting distance is a maximum of 200km, are included. Information on the average commuting distance is based on the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE’s Monitoring System of Urban Structure (YKR), to which Statistics Finland has submitted data.
